Basking Shark
Season 3 – Episode 19
What’s it all about?
Sarah is keen to adopt a sea creature, but doesn’t get her first choice.
This is the episode where:
• Sarah & Duck are watching funny seacow videos on their computer when they come across a sea animals adoption website
• Sarah decides that she’d like to adopt a sea animal, but all the animals she picks have already been adopted
• Sarah decides to adopt the only sea animal left – a basking shark
• Sarah & Duck get to have a video call with their adopted basking shark, but they are unsure how to talk to it
• Sarah remembers that John has a pet octopus called Taco. She asks them to join the video call to see if they can help.
• Sarah says that she thinks the basking shark sounds sad, but John notices that the shark is singing in ‘B-flat’. This gives Sarah an idea!
• Sarah grabs her tuba, Duck bangs a drum, John plays his double bass, Flamingo shakes a maraca – and the shark sings back in tune
• Soon they are having a musical conversation together, with everyone joining in!
This is what we learn...
- Adoption is when you agree to look after someone or something
- If you adopt an animal from a zoo or aquarium, they carry on living there but you agree to support them
- Basking sharks have extremely big mouths – they need them for eating plankton
- B-flat is a musical note
- Music is a great way to communicate – especially if you don’t speak the same language
